Cloud Migrating a French Enterprise Platform from Orange Cloud to AWS

Context

Industry: Enterprise IT / Outsourcing
Client: Real Estate Tech Company
Environment: Orange Cloud → AWS
Focus: Enterprise cloud migration
Scope: Assessment, architecture, migration execution
My involvement: Lead Infrastructure Architect, Architecture team member
Duration: ~6 months
Year: 2024

Introduction

This project focused on migrating the enterprise infrastructure of SeLoger from Orange Cloud to AWS. The work was delivered as part of a large cloud migration program run by Endava under tight timelines and operational pressure.

I was involved both as Lead Infrastructure Architect for one of the migration teams and as part of the central Architecture team, working closely with senior client stakeholders.

The Situation

The existing infrastructure was hosted on Orange Cloud, a platform that is rarely used outside France and unfamiliar to most migration teams. Internal knowledge about the environment was limited due to the loss of key people over time. Documentation was incomplete, and many dependencies were not clearly understood.

Before any migration could begin, the real structure of the platform had to be uncovered and understood.

What Was Done

The project started with a detailed cloud migration assessment. During this phase, the full infrastructure and application landscape was analyzed. Logical applications were identified, dependencies were mapped, and application ownership was clarified for both pre- and post-migration states.

Based on the assessment results, several teams were formed to migrate logical application groups independently. I led one of these teams, responsible for planning and executing migrations within the agreed architecture and timeline.

In parallel, as part of the Architecture team, I worked on defining migration patterns, resolving architectural questions, and aligning technical decisions with business priorities and delivery constraints. This included direct reporting and regular communication with the client’s C-level management.

My Role

I acted as Lead Infrastructure Architect for one of the migration teams, taking responsibility for technical planning, execution, and coordination.

As a member of the Architecture team, I also contributed to cross-team architectural decisions and helped ensure consistency across migration waves. My team became one of the most effective teams in the program in terms of delivery speed and understanding of the environment.

Outcomes

The enterprise infrastructure was successfully migrated from Orange Cloud to AWS within approximately six months.

The migration reduced operational risk, removed dependency on a niche cloud platform, and established a stable AWS-based foundation for future development. The project was completed within the required timeframe despite limited initial knowledge of the environment.

Key Takeaways

This project demonstrated how unfamiliar platforms and lost institutional knowledge significantly increase migration risk. Without a structured assessment phase, such migrations are difficult to control.

It also reinforced the importance of strong architectural coordination when multiple teams migrate in parallel under time pressure.

How This Experience Helps in Similar Situations

Many organizations face cloud migration from legacy or less common platforms with limited documentation and high operational risk. I help teams structure these migrations by restoring visibility, defining logical migration units, and aligning technical execution with business timelines.

This approach helps deliver migrations safely even under constrained conditions.

Closing

If you are planning a migration from a legacy or niche cloud platform under tight timelines, this project reflects the type of work and responsibility I bring to complex migration initiatives.
